It's the standard free-to-play balancing model at work, complete with in-app purchase options to buy extra upgrading cash, except that Pacific Rim isn't a free game. The game has frequent difficulty spikes, where you will have to replay past missions over and over again to upgrade your Jaeger enough to win. Cash can also be used to buy new Jaegers to pilot, upgrading from the starting mech to the four featured in the film. The cash can be used to upgrade your Jaeger mech with new weapons and armor, or buy one-time boosts like extra shielding or repair pods. The campaign spans 30 missions against a range of Kaiju, with secondary mission objectives like defeating a Kaiju with a special attack or winning without taking damage doling out extra cash. The Kaiju animations are oddly difficult to read, making it harder than it needs to be to predict which direction to dodge or parry for an attack.
